Injury to a finger or toe can result in a collection of blood under the nail plate resulting in a subungual hematoma (commonly referred to as black toe). The pressure of this trapped blood can cause considerable pain. Controlled nail trephination using a PathFormer drains the accumulated blood without breaching the nail bed.
